Title: A Case for Parenting Education: Based on ACEs Science

Presenter: Rene Howitt, Founder COPE24, Missouri Child Advocate

COPE24 Parenting SkillsDescription: This hour long workshop will expand upon staff’s current knowledge of trauma-informed education and trauma-informed therapy by exploring additional research from the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study where these terms originated.

Those working in the world of child advocacy or child welfare, continue to see the problems of dysfunctional families increase. Despite all the efforts put forth by the government and private agencies growth of this public health problem is defeating our nation. Through this workshop, your staff, and administrators will be informed of the depth of this problem.

According: “According to the Centers for Disease Control, adverse childhood experiences, such as loss of a parent through death, divorce, incarceration, physical, verbal or sexual abuse, living with a caregiver who is struggling with mental illness or addiction, and living in poverty, have been linked to poor attendance and performance in school, risky health behaviors, chronic health conditions, increased chance of incarceration and early death.

While educators, church population and the public often feel they have adequate knowledge on these issues, studies continue to show “childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration, and lifelong health and opportunity. As such, early experiences are an important public health issue.”

This presentation will show a direct link between family health, serious social issues, and chronic physical and mental health diagnosis through an introduction to ACE Science. The audience will have the ability to advance the data collected by participating in the original ACE study survey.

What does the program include?

We’ve taken 10 very common frustrating parenting situations and put them into a program, so that we can begin discussing with our youth the realities of parenting. This program includes:

  1. Teacher/Instructors manual meeting all national curriculum standards
  2. Manual also includes student worksheets and pre/post student surveys
  3. 10 parenting scenario videos. Each parenting video situation is approx. five-minutes in length. There is one video situation for each of the 10 chapters of this program

The teacher/instructor would begin the class by showing one video. Each scenario will escalate to the point of abuse, neglect, or dysfunction. The video is then stopped and the teacher/instructor can turn to class asking….what went wrong? What other choices did the parents have? What will you do?
